Chernobyl nuclear power accident or Chernobyl disaster - the destruction of the fourth power block which happened on the 26th of April 1986 in Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR (now - Ukraine). The destruction had the explosive nature and the reactor was completely destroyed. Large quantities of radioactive substances were released into the environment. The accident is regarded as the largest of its kind in the history of nuclear energy. During the first three months after the accident 31 persons died. Long-term effects of radiation detected over the next 15 years which caused the death of between 60 and 80 persons. 134 people suffered from radiation illness. More than 115 thousand of people were evacuated from the 30-km zone. To eliminate the effects significant resources were mobilized. Over 600 thousand of people participated in the elimination of consequences of the accident. In contrast to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the explosion in Chernobyl reminded very powerful «dirty bomb». A major damaging factor was the radioactive infection. The cloud from the burning reactor spread over the biggest part of Europe a variety of radioactive materials of iodine and cesium radionuclides. The greatest loss observed over large areas in the Soviet Union, located near the reactor and related now to the territory of the Republic of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
