For the first time the Independence Day of Ukraine was celebrated on July 16, 1991 - the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Ukraine by the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR. However, later this date was postponed to August 24. On August 24, 1991 the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. On this very day the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada sang the hymn of the warriors group Sichovi striltsy and even the communists voted for independence!
