How to cross Ukrainian border in times of Covid-19?

Hello, dear travelers! Since borders have been opened and flights allowed our agency receives numerous questions dedicated to the current COVID situation in Ukraine.

The most demanded one is how to cross the border, who can enter Ukraine and what is the safety policy. We decided to answer all these questions below.

Foreign citizens are allowed to enter Ukraine if they have not been previously banned from entering the country for any reason.

What documents do you need to enter Ukraine?

The Border Guard Service may ask you to prove the purpose of your visit to Ukraine. Then it will be necessary to show the hotel reservation, invitation from the host and other documents.

Foreign citizens necessarily must have a medical insurance (medical policy) with them, which covers COVID-19 treatment in Ukraine. If you don’t have one, the border guard will refuse to enter the country.

Medical insurance should be provided in electronic or paper form by Ukrainian insurance company or a foreign company that provides medical services in Ukraine.

If you have a permanent or temporary residence permit in Ukraine you don’t need such insurance.

Do I need to go through quarantine or self-isolation upon arrival in Ukraine?

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has divided all countries in the world into two zones: red and green, depending on the number of active COVID-19 cases. According to new changes, red zone includes countries where the number of active cases exceeds 55 per 100 thousand of the population. Green zone – where this number is below 55 per 100 thousand of the population. If some countries don’t not keep statistics of active cases, they will be included in the red zone list.

If you are traveling from a green zone list country you can move freely after crossing the Ukrainian border.

If you are traveling from a red zone list country, you must keep a 14-day observation or self-isolation. Observation requires to stay in specially designated places under the supervision of the staff. Self-isolation is the ability to stay at home. In this case, the control is carried out via your mobile phone (smartphone), on which it is necessary to install “Diy vdoma” application. The application regularly sends requests to check the location and asks to take a photo of the user.

The list of countries of red and green zones can be found on the website of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The list is updated permanently.

Transit route to Ukraine

If the passenger flies to Ukraine from the green zone country list through a red zone country, upon arrival in Ukraine he or she needs to confirm that he or she came from a green zone country, for example, by showing a boarding pass. In this case, 2 weeks of self-isolation is not necessary.

If a passenger travels from a red list country in transit through a green list country, self-isolation is required.

How to end self-isolation earlier?

The Ukrainian government allows to end self-isolation earlier if you return from country of the red zone. To do this, it is necessary to pass a PCR coronavirus test in ukrainian laboratory. If the result is negative which confirms that the passenger is not sick, the approved laboratories transmit the information to the Public Health Center, after which self-isolation is finished.

You can get tested in Boryspil (Kyiv), Lviv and Kharkiv airports upon arrival. The service costs from 1500 to 2100 UAH per person. In one day you will know the result.

If the trip to Ukraine lasts less than 14 days?

If you enter Ukraine from a red zone country and plan to go abroad again in 14 days a PCR test for coronavirus must be done and self-isolation will be stopped after receiving a negative result. Otherwise, while leaving Ukraine a traveller could be fined for violating the quarantine rules.
